The Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ayuba Elkanah on Wednesday vowed that he and his men would do everything possible to ensure that in the forthcoming 2022, crimes such as kidnappings and abductions for ransom are stopped.

He also disclosed that under his watch several weapons had been recovered from suspected criminals in the state.

Briefing journalists at the Police Headquarters in Gusau, Elkanah said that his command recovered nine AK47 rifles, one rocket launcher, one rocket and seven magazines.

Policemen in the state also rescued three kidnapped victims, including a three months old baby.

The number one policeman in the state explained that the achievements were recorded in the ongoing effort to sustain the relative peace, which citizens had been enjoying in the state in the past two months.

He also seized the opportunity to assure members of the public on the preparedness of his command in the forthcoming Christmas and New Year Celebrations.

He said: “At the moment, we have made an adequate security arrangement before, during and after the two festivities. Our massive deployment of personnel has covered all critical and vulnerable places, especially worship centers and recreational areas. This assignment is going to be conducted in total collaboration with other security agencies and critical stakeholders. We are therefore appealing for cooperation and support to ensure hitch free celebrations.”

He also revealed that in the forthcoming year, 2022, he and his men would do more, especially in the areas of arrest of criminals, recovery of sophisticated weapons, minimise attacks on villages and communities as well as near total stoppage of kidnapping and abduction of people for ransom.

He stated: “The year, 2021 has been very tough and tedious, but the perseverance and persistent commitment of our officers and men, even some paid with their lives, has tremendously impacted the current relative peace Zamfara State enjoys. We therefore, resolved to redouble our unalloyed commitment and sacrifice so that, Year 2022 becomes a prosperous year, where peace and security of the citizenry is guaranteed for Social, Economic and Political growth. Our ability to discharge our duty successfully and maintain the current tempo of peace in the state was due to the support and guides we received on daily basis from our amiable and indefatigable Inspector-General-of-Police, (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba. This has gone a long way in strengthening our operational capacity and professional efficiency.”

He stressed that the foresight and the doggedness of the State Government, through the unique leadership of Governor of Zamfara State, Dr. Bello Muhammad Matawalle, coupled with the will to succeed was indeed unparallel in the anal history of the state since its creation.

The governor, stated the CP, had drawn closer to all the security agencies in the state by providing the wherewithal necessary to get to the root cause of the act of banditry in the state.

He noted that in the last four months that he assumed duty as the number one policeman in the state, journalists had been very supportive.

“The much talked about sensational journalism was never part of your trade, and the adage that ‘Pen is mightier than the Sword’ does not influence your reports of events in Zamfara State,” said Elkanah.

He said that on December 14th, 2021 at about 11:30am, Police operatives attached to 78 PMF Squadron Maradun, while on a rigorous confidence building patrol along Sokoto – Gusau road came across some armed robbers.

The robbers were trying to block the road and had immediately opened fire on sighting the police team. The policemen returned fire for fire.

Elkanah said: “The robbers abandoned a red Boxer motorcycle at ‘Kwanar Sado’ in Talata Mafara Local Government Area. Further search of the scene resulted in the recovery of a magazine of an AK-47 rifle. Preliminary investigation revealed that the abandoned motorcycle was stolen from Garbadu village in T/Mafara by the armed bandits on December 13, 2021. The motorcycle was handed over to the rightful owner.
