The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai
Owoseni and his policemen at the command, on Friday made a 64-year-old, who
attempted to kill herself by jumping into lagoon along Carter Bridge, to weep
for job.
The woman, Mrs. Abigail Ogunyinka, a food vendor,
residing at the Alakuko area of the metropolis, came to Carter Bridge and
jumped into the lagoon there.
The woman jumped into the lagoon, determined to end
her life because she owed a micro finance bank N150, 000 and couldn’t refund
the loan.
According to her, the bank had been threatening and
making her has sleepless nights.
Ogunyinka, who is childless, has a husband; the man
has been suffering from stroke for four months. The woman has been shouldering
the family responsibility alone.
On the fateful day she left Alakuko, heading to
Carter Bridge to kill herself, she went with her maid. At point, she told the
girl to go back home.
The girl, who told journalists that she refused to
leave because she knew Ogunyinka’s state of mind and her constant threat to
kill herself because she was tired of struggling, without the ends of ever
meeting.
When Ogunyinka tried to jump, the maid grabbed and
held onto her. The old woman struggled valiantly and disengaged herself from
the girl’s grasp.
During the struggle with her maid, she screamed
alerting fishermen. Immediately Ogunyinka went into the lagoon, fishermen
rushed and rescued her.
She was handed over to the police. At police
command, she told policemen her story.
Many eyes got wet and in a blink of an eye, the
policemen started contributing money for her.
When Owoseni finally came to interview her, his
hearts also broke after he heard her story. He joined his policemen in
contributing money. Owoseni went a step further, to buy foodstuffs for Ogunyinka.
Ogunyinka explained that she collected the money
from the bank in two installments. She couldn’t pay because of her husband’s
challenge, which was milking her dry.
It was gathered that Ogunyinka once made an attempt
to take her live before Friday.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer
(PPRO), Oladehinde Famous-Cole, yesterday revealed that after the policemen heard
her story, they contributed money for her.
Famous-Cole said: “The Commissioner of Police
ordered that foodstuff and some beverages should be bought for her. The command
did a selfless service to humanity. The command is still evaluating her health
condition and the investigation is ongoing.”
According to Famous-Cole, the second suicide victim,
Mrs. Taiwo Momoh, a textile dealer, was also being medically examined.
Momoh tried to kill herself because she owed some
business associates money. She said she started owing after she was duped.
