The Inspector-General of Police,
Ibrahim Idris, has inaugurated a housing estate in Ibadan, Oyo State, to ensure
enhanced performance and discourage corrupt tendencies among his men.
Idris, who was represented by the
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Administration and
Finance, Mr Maigari Dikko, said that provision of affordable housing for
policemen was one of the cardinal objectives of the current police management
team.
A similar estate inaugurated last
year, is the Muhammadu Buhari Estate with over 300 housing units of two and
three bedroom bungalows. According to him, the Muhammadu Buhari Estate was
commissioned in Badagry, Lagos.
The DIG noted: “These houses are
being sold to police officers of all ranks at affordable prices through
mortgage financing to be paid within a specified period.”
He added: “ The Nigeria Police Force
had to partner with various developers and financial institutions in order to
tackle the challenges created by inadequate financing. This administration has
sustained major result- oriented initiatives aimed at reinvigorating the police
welfare system through several creative methods of affordability available to
us. When these houses are completed, the challenges of accommodation for
police officers both in and out of service would have been taken care of.”
In his remark, Mr Kabir Ayinde
Tukur, the acting Chairman and Managing Director of Cooperative Mortgage Bank which
facilitated the partnership arrangement, said the estate would have over 1,000
housing units. "On quarterly basis, we shall be delivering about 250
housing units. This is just the beginning of affordable and comfortable
living," declared Tukur.
