Abia Police goes after cultists, drug addicts

Emmanuel Ifeanyi, Aba

The Abia State Police Command has arrested over 20 suspected cult members and drug addicts.
The suspects were arrested during a raid of criminal hideouts by operatives of the Federal Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) in the city.

According to police sources, the suspects were grabbed at different spots in the city, including Ama-Hausa, Down Below, Milverton Road, Borrow Pit, Ogbor-Hill waterside and several other places.

Residents residing in Aba Town strongly believe that cultists have taken over some of the aforementioned areas. These areas are notorious and are often where citizens are attacked and valuables taken.

The police source said: “The hideouts serve as breeding grounds for drug addicts who perpetrate criminal activities in the city. These spots have become breeding grounds for members of Black Axe and other cult groups. They come here to purchase all kind of hard drugs, which keep them high and able to perpetrate crime. But since we started raiding their hideouts, everywhere is now calm.”

He further added: “It is game over for dealers of hard drugs and cultists in Aba and environs. We will continue to raid various hideouts of these criminals. Before now, one could purchase any amount of cocaine, Indian hemp or codeine at various hideouts in Aba at any time of the day or night, but not anymore.”
Some residents, who spoke with our correspondent, urged the police to ensure crime free festive season in the city.

Efforts to get the reaction of the Abia State Commissioner of Police were unsuccessful as he was said to have been transferred out of the state.
