Two robbery suspects, who specialized in
smashing motorists windscreens with hammers along Lekki/Epe Expressway, Lagos
State, before robbery them have been arrested.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations
Officer (PPRO), Chike Oti, who confirmed the arrest, identified the two
suspects as Akpan Samuel and Ani Chukwuma.
According to Oti, the suspects were arrested on
October 29, by operatives of Maroko Police Station led by Divisional Police
Officer (DPO), a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Mr. Issah Abdumajid,
along Marwa Bridge along, Lekki/ Epe Expressway.
The image maker explained that the suspects always
positioned themselves in the traffic in order to rob their targets. Describing
their modus operandi, Oti said that the gang members used to hurl stones at
oncoming motorists, thereby smashing their vehicle windscreens. The action
naturally compels the shocked driver to halt. Once the driver stops, the gang
would pounce, robbing him or her of valuables.
Oti said: “They smash windscreens of vehicles
whose drivers refused to roll down their glasses when commanded to do so. The
hammer and an improvised pistol that appears like a perfect prototype of a berretta
pistol were recovered from them. The activities of the robbers had been a
source of concern to the Command thus the Lagos State Commissioner of Police,
Edgal Imohimi, directed the DPO to mobilise all assets at his disposal to
ensure the arrest and prosecution of the hoodlums.”
The suspects were said to have been charged
to Igbosere Magistrates Court 10 on November 1, and they were later
remanded in Ikoyi Prison.
Imohimi, however, reacting to the arrest of
the suspects, promised members of the public that the activities of the
criminals would soon be a thing of the past as the Command has increased
surveillance along all routes with heavy traffic across the state.
