Harvest of robbers: Police arrest suspected robbers, recover weapons in Benue

The Benue State Police Command yesterday said it has arrested a total of 12 suspected armed robbers including a female, who have been terrorising motorists and commuters.

The robbery suspects were arrested by men of the Operation Zenda and Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) at different points during routine operations.

Commissioner of Police, Ene Okon, who briefed journalists on the recent milestones, recorded by the command in crime fighting, said that the first set of the suspects were nabbed along Vandeikya-Adikpo road following a tip-off.

He gave names of the suspects to include: Mnguember Apuu, 22, (Armourer), Anger Kunav, 20, Iorungwa Hywakaa, 22, Fanen Yev, 25 and Igbadoo Sule, 24, who is also their gang leader.

According to Okon, exhibits recovered from them include; two locally fabricated guns, one expended cartridge, three 9mm live ammunition, five cutlasses, one small axe, two  polythene bags of dried leafs suspected to be Indian hemp, three black jackets and assorted charms.

Okon added: "Other items suspected to have been robbed from innocent citizens include; New assorted clothes, eight handsets, one laptop and a motorcycle.”
He said that the suspects confessed to be the ones robbing people on that axis as the lady among them usually keeps their arms after every operation.

Okon also disclosed the arrest of two suspected persons on a Bajaj motorcycle by the CTU team at Sati Agirigi Village Katsina Ala-Takum during a routine operation. He said that when the suspects saw his men, they quickly turn in an attempt to escape, but were chased during which they dropped their handbag containing 55 ammunition of various calibres and some dangerous charms.

Okon explained that six other suspected robbers, belonging to a gang of nine were also arrested whose names he gave as Akighir Tyolumun, 18, (Gang leader), Iorlumun Kyanya, 18, Chia Joshua, 18, Tevershima Terhemba, 25, Peter Terlumun, 20, and Tarkighir Emmanuel, 18, all of various addresses at Ugbema in Buruku Local Government Area of the state.

The Commissioner of Police said that items recovered from them were; one single barrel gun, six Army camouflage uniforms with three caps, eight handsets, a pair of shoes, one phone charger, a torch and small pink coloured bag.

Okon restated the command's commitment to rid the state of all forms of criminality.
