Army dismisses 4 for rape, extortion

The authorities of the Nigerian Army, in Abuja, on Tuesday, dismissed four soldiers for a case of rape, extortion and assault.

The soldiers, one corporal and three privates attached to the Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army, were Nsa Eyedep, Emzien Uzoma, Ugwu Mathew and Efosa Ikhuomoregbe.

Briefing newsmen on the dismissal, Brigadier-General Emmanuel  Atewe, Commander, Guards Brigade, said the soldiers were said to have abducted and raped some women at the Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, in December 2012.

The commander, represented by Major Peter Elayo, said the allegation was broadcast in one of the broadcast station on January 14, 2013.

He said the brigade convened a board of inquiry to investigate the circumstance surrounding the allegation, with a view to taking punitive action and prevent a future reoccurrence.

“The board, whose report has already been submitted, was able to establish that the four soldiers, during the period, abandoned their duty post to an unauthorised destination.”

Atewe said the brigade had an enviable track record and high standard of discipline and thus would not condone any act of indiscipline or misdemeanor.

He said the soldiers would be handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution as appropriate in a competent court of law.

In an interview with newsmen, one of the dismissed soldier said it was the work of the devil and pleaded for forgiveness.
