CORPSES recovered from the Ezu River, Amansea, in Awka North Local
Government Area of Anambra State, which had since been buried, will be
exhumed for autopsy, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Lawrence
Ikeakor, has said.
Nigerian Tribune reported that four other
decomposing bodies were found floating on Thursday, bringing the total
number of bodies found to 44, since the natives of Amensea made the
first discovery last week Saturday.
Addressing newsmen on Monday at the Ezu River Bridge, Amansea, Dr Ikeakor disclosed that the autopsy would begin on Monday.
“The
autopsy will help to arrive at a comprehensive report,” he said, as he
recalled that the first autopsy was carried out on three corpses on
Thursday, even as he urged for patience from the public.
He
appealed to members of the public to stop speculating what caused their
death, adding that he was optimistic that the truth will be known.
Also
speaking, the state Commissioner for Local Government, Mrs Azuka Enemo,
explained that the state government considered the incident as very
worrisome and barbaric, adding that since the discoveries, the
government had been trying to find out what caused the incident.
She,
however, said some measures had been taken to address problems of
Amansea community, by constantly supplying water to the residents,
regretting that their major source of water for domestic use had been
polluted by decomposing bodies.
Meanwhile, a front-line
politician and philanthropist, Dr Obinna Uzoh, has donated 15,000 bags
of satchet water, 500 cartons of bottled water and an undisclosed amount
of cash for purchase of water treatment chemicals to Amansea community
to ameliorate their problems.
