Former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Alhaji Mohammed
Gambo-Jimeta, yesterday reviewed the state of the nation, lamenting that
the government must do more for the security forces. Gambo, who was
also National Security Adviser (NSA), said Nigeria needs a strong
defence system and increase budget allocations to improve the standard
of living.
He said: “Let’s for God’s sake put our priority right, build a robust
defence system, build a robust internal security system. Then, we could
have the pleasure to look at other things that the public through their
own goodwill will say yes, you are doing your best and they will come
and compliment whatever you want”. Gambo, who spoke at the opening of a
national summit on security challenges, organized by the Nigerian Police
in conjunction with Vanguard Newspapers in Abuja, also warned Nigerians
who run their tongues and talk irresponsibly at the slightest
provocation to stop the habit as their comment was injurious to the
happiness of ordinary Nigerian.
He attributed the current security situation in the country where
some armed religious groups have taken to bombing and killing of
innocent Nigerians as a result of what he described as “self-inflicted
situation by leaders and other stakeholders, who do not understand that
if one Nigerian has a feeling of insecurity and he is afraid to go about
freely and enjoy his God-given right that a state is supposed to give
to him, that is what s weakening the well-being of the state”. He said:
“Our current security situation is self-inflicted arising from not only
in the situation in the Nigeria, but almost in all developing countries.
You cannot have a state and fail to produce for the institutions of
the state that are supposed to support the wellbeing of these states and
therefore, its citizenry. Nothing should be taken for granted”. The
former IGP said. He attributed the emergence of the Islamist sect, Boko
Haram as a result of bad governance where people find it difficult to
feed, while the police and the military who are supposed to curtail the
activities of this group still need more modern weapons to tackle the
menace. Rather than equip the police and the military to fight the
menace, he alleged that government was busy spending billions of Naira
on projects that would not better the lot of the average Nigerian.
On the speculation that Boko Haram was created to torment the
government of President Goodluck Jonathan, because he is a Christain,
Gambo-Jimeta dismissed the rumour, saying if it were true, then some
other groups would have risen up in the past to torment the regimes of
both Generals Yakubu Gowon and Olusegun Obasanjo, who are Christians,
but ruled this great country successfully without such problems.
In his address, IGP Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar, while noting that the
nation had witnessed security challenges, however, promised that the
police under his leadership will continue to provide a safe and secured
environment for the citizentry. He said, “providing a free society where
all those living in the country can conduct their lawful businesses
without let or hinderance is the present police management dream for the
country”.
Also speaking, President Goodluck Jonathan, who was represented by
the Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade (rtd), said
his administration in its determination to reorganize the police for
better performance, has improved on training and retraining,
sophistication of weaponry and equipment as well as improved on the
welfare of officers and men. President Jonathan also said henceforth,
higher standard would be maintained in both recruitment and promotion of
personnel.
He listed some of his reforms in the police force to include training
and capacity building, modernization of police institutions and
converting the Police College at Wudil, Kano, to a degree-awarding
institution like the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and the entrenchment
of discipline in the police, among other several achievements. In his
address, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Sen. Bala
Mohammed, said, his administration will set up a trust fund to meet the
security needs of residents.
