A suspected pipeline vandal, Bimiwe
Epasimore, who was arrested by the Police Special Task Force on
Anti-Pipeline vandalism, has denied being a pipeline vandal.
The suspect, who claimed to be married
and has children, said, “I’m not a pipeline vandal, I’m only an
informant to security agents.
“I was set ablaze by some vandals when they discovered that I was an informant.”
Epasimore, who is presently at the
Accident and Emergency Unit at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital,
Idi Araba, was arrested on Saturday at Arepo area of Ogun State.
According to Police authorities, the
suspect was one of the vandals who was siphoning petrol from a Nigerian
National Petroleum Corporation pipeline when it exploded.
Our correspondents, who visited the
hospital on Sunday observed that the suspect was on drip in a secluded
room and was handcuffed to the hospital bed while a policeman in mufti
stood guard.
The suspect also had severe burns on his arms and thighs and could not talk at length having also sustained a bullet wound.
Meanwhile, it was learnt that another
suspect, who was brought to the hospital with Epasimore, died at the
hospital and had been transferred to the mortuary of the hospital.
A police source, who craved anonymity,
said the deceased, Sunday Reuben, would have survived if he hadn’t been
rejected by other hospitals.
“We had taken them to several hospitals
but they were rejected. By the time they were accepted at LUTH, Reuben
had given up the ghost.
“It’s sad because he was the only
surviving child of his parents. His other siblings died in pipeline
explosions and one would have thought he would have learnt a lesson from
it but he continued along that line.”
