131 auto crashes in one week •As FRSC warns drivers against speed limit violation

Speed limit violation has continued to be an issue as stakeholders strive to achieve safety on Nigerian roads. It accounts for nearly half of the 131 crashes that occurred across the country in the last one week.
In a graphical representation of crash data presented by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), speed limit violation was rated as accounting for 59 per cent of the said crashes.
That probable cause of the road accidents was followed by loss of vehicle control, whose frequency was put at 31 per cent, while tyre burst took 23 per cent. The frequency of dangerous driving as a contributory factor in the crashes was put at 19 per cent, while wrongful overtaking was responsible for seven per cent.
Mechanical deficiency in vehicles and brake failure were also causative agents as they each accounted for five per cent of the crashes.
The frequencies of obstruction, driving under alcohol/drug influence, fatigue and bad road in the crashes were put at four per cent, two per cent, one per cent and one per cent respectively.
The FRSC then advised motorists to do their bit of road safety campaign, which requires them to be cautious and respect speed limit and other traffic rules when plying the roads.
