Kwara Poly shut indefinitely over students’ protest

THE Kwara State government has closed down the state polytechnic indefinitely, over violent protest carried out by students in Ilorin, on Tuesday.
It is recalled that some aggrieved students of the institution staged a protest on Monday, over alleged shooting of one of their colleagues by a policeman escorting bullion van belonging to a commercial bank in IIorin.
The protest, which also paralysed social and economic activities in the area, saw law enforcement agents patrolling the metropolis to ensure security, law and order.
The state government has also appealed to the students to remain calm and avoid any actions capable of disturbing peace and order.
In a statement issued in Ilorin on Tuesday, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Isiaka Gold, described as unfortunate, the reported injury on a student by men of the Nigeria Police and called on the students to maintain the peace and disallow miscreants from hijacking their peaceful protests.
Alhaji Gold said while government recognised the students’ right to peaceful protest, the full weight of the law would be brought to bear on anyone apprehended for breaking the law under any guise.
The government called on the students to return to their various homes, pending the reopening of the institution, which has been closed down following the incident.
Also, the spokesman of the state police command, Femi Fabode, in a statement, said: “The Kwara State police command regrets to announce the unfortunate incident that occured on Monday where one of our corporal on bank escort mistakenly shot and injured a polytechnic student on the legs.”
