ANGERED by alleged shooting of one of their colleagues by a
policeman escorting bullion van belonging to a commercial bank in
IIorin, students of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, staged a violent
protest to express their grievance.
The protest, which paralysed commercial and social activities around Maraba and Murtala Mohammed Way areas of Ilorin, saw the students burning tyres, leading to pandemonium in the metropolis.
However, the Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State police command, Mr Femi Fabode, said the suspected police officer had been arrested, adding that justice would be made to take its right course on the incident after thorough investigations.
The incident, which occurred at about 2.10 p.m. on Monday, threw popular Maraba, Murtala Mohammed way and Post Office areas, among other suburbs of Ilorin in confusion, as movement was hampered round the areas.
An eyewitness said the injured student was inside a taxi in a traffic hold up when the bullion van belonging to one of the commercial banks sped along to ensure its free passage.
“The policeman escorting the bullion van tried stopping the taxi and in the process aimed to shoot its tyre.
“Unfortunately, Ahmed Dayo, a ND 1 student of the department of Accounting, was hit in error, destroying his leg,” the eyewitness said.
It was also gathered that the driver and other policemen in the police escort van allegedly sped off to escape the mob of students, who immediately took to the streets.
The victim was said to have been taken to a nearby private hospital, where he was given First Aid treatment and later referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital for adequate medical attention.
