Suspected cultists kill brothers, pregnant woman

Lagos Police PRO, Ngozi Braide

Two brothers, Malik and Mufu Akewusola, were shot dead in front of their home on Akerele Street, Shitta area of Surulere, Lagos on Thursday evening by gunmen suspected to be cultists.
An eyewitness told Saturday PUNCH that a pregnant woman was hit by a stray bullet during the incident, which caused pandemonium in the area.
The brothers were said to be relaxing in front of their house when a gang stormed the place around 8 pm and shot at them multiple times.
The eyewitness told our correspondent that everybody in the area scampered to safety when the shooting started.
He put the ages of the brothers at between 25 and 28.
“We came back after the gang left and found the brothers in a pool of their blood. We don’t really know how many the shooters were or who they were. Immediately we heard the shooting, everybody around ran away. The woman was selling soft drinks in front of the house when she was hit,” he said.
There have been conflicting reports as to where the brothers were shot as some say they were killed at a leisure joint a few metres from their house.
A woman, who identified herself simply as Adeola, was one of the sympathisers who rushed to the scene after the incident.
She told our correspondents that the woman was the younger sister of the Akewusolas’ mother.
Efforts were made to save the woman as she was rushed to an undisclosed hospital. She died before they got to the hospital, our correspondents learnt.
Saturday PUNCH learnt that no arrest had been made as at press time in connection with the killings.
Police spokesperson in the state, Ngozi Braide, did not pick her call when one of our correspondents contacted her on Friday.
Our correspondent also contacted the Divisional Police Officer for Surulere division, Mr. Ugobueze Ogbodo, to make findings about the case.
“I am on leave,” he simply said.
