The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has
deployed about 7000 personnel for the Ondo State governorship election coming
up on tomorrow.
According to the NSCDC spokesperson, Emmanuel Okeh, the officers were drawn from the surrounding states like Osun, Edo, Lagos and Oyo to complement those on ground in order to guarantee a hitch-free election.
Okeh, in a statement on behalf of the Corps Director General Dr. Ade Abolurin, stated that personnel were carefully drafted to Ondo to ensure that all necessary security apparatus of the Corps are put into action before, during and after the election.
He assured the people of the state that the previous experiences of kidnapping of candidates, INEC officials and snatching of electoral materials such as ballot boxes and other electoral vices would not recur.
Abolurin reaffirmed the deployment of his officers to sensitive areas of possible contention such as polling booth, collation centers, INEC state offices and annexes, vital transport routes and routes of all returning officers from their collection centers and other potential hot spots.
He said, "The Corps will neither bow down to threats and intimidations nor compromise her stand while carrying out its duties as these are usually deliberate attempts of desperate mischief makers who make their gains through election rigging and all other malpractices associated with it.
"He stressed that politicians and their parties will be held responsible for any act of misconduct either as a person or as representatives of their party agents or otherwise for breaking the law by harassing law-abiding citizens or by engaging in any act capable of disrupting peaceful conduct of the election.
"Any form of thuggery will be confronted and whoever is caught will be dealt with decisively in accordance with the laws of the land.
"Abolurin stated that to complement the efforts of the personnel deployed, especially in the area of crowd control, search and rescue, highly trained sniffer dogs and Special Force teams were also dispatched alongside the Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgent Units of the Corps in order to man strategic locations in the state and its environs".
Further, Okeh said, "Reacting to the wanton destruction of critical public and private infrastructure in some parts of the country, the Commandant General has rolled out new strategies in providing maximum and enhanced security around all installations while reassuring Nigerians that other aspects of the Corps mandate shall not be neglected.
"Vandals and other social criminal minded persons are warned to desist as the Corps is prepared to deal heavily with any banditry".
