The Lagos State Government on Tuesday said it
rescued two survivors in the Sunday canoe accident at Imude in Oto-Awori Local
Council Development Area.
The Commissioner for Rural Development, Mr.
Cornelius Ojelabi, added that nine corpses were also recovered from the water
and had been buried.
He said, “There were 11 people in the canoe,
which capsized on Sunday.
“Two people were rescued and are responding to
treatment. The other nine persons in the canoe drowned. Their bodies had been
recovered completely and were buried yesterday (Monday).”
The commissioner, however, said the drowning of
the nine persons was not as a result of natural disaster.
He explained that they were victims of water
pressure caused by a bigger and powerful speed boat, which caused the canoe to
capsize.
“It was the pressure from speed boat that caused
the canoe to capsize and not any natural disaster,” Ojelabi said.
The commissioner added that the state government
would investigate the incident further to prevent a recurrence.
