110-year-old woman’s corpse disappears from mortuary
The corpse of a 110-year-old woman, Madam Victoria Oguzie from Umuomara in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, has been reported missing from the mortuary it was deposited by the family three weeks ago.
A family source told LEADESHIP SUNDAY that the members of the family had gone to retrieve the corpse from the mortuary at Ogbaku, Mbaitoli, but they were shocked when the attendants claimed that the corpse was missing.
The angry members of the family allegedly attempted to bring down the foundation of the hospital with dangerous weapons, prompting the workers to run away while the owner of the hospital went into hiding.
LEADERSHIP SUNDAY learnt that it was not the first time a corpse was missing from the hospital. Two years ago, the corpse of an aged man was reported missing in the facility.
Some members of the family alleged that the hospital might be using the bodies for ritual purposes, but an official of the hospital debunked the claim, saying it was just a case of misplacement of the corpse.
The owner of the hospital could not be reached as the building was deserted when LEADESHIP SUNDAY visited. The state Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Vitalis Onugu, said he was yet to be briefed on the matter.
