Robbers raid GSM shop, kill policeman


Armed robbers struck in Rumuogba in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State on Saturday, killing a riot policeman and inflicting a gunshot injury on a sales girl working in a GSM plaza.
The armed robbers were said to have escaped with an unconfirmed amount of money contained in three Ghana-must-go bags after the operation.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the armed robbers took away a rifle belonging to the slain policeman during the incident, which took place around 4.30pm at the Artillery Bus stop, Rumuogba in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
Apart from the cash, GSM handsets were also taken away by the armed robbers.
A source, who witnessed the incident, said, “Armed robbers attacked a GSM phone plaza at Artillery Bus Stop, Rumuogba in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State at about 4.30pm.
“One riot policeman was killed while a sales girl sustained gunshot injury. The robbers reportedly escaped with three bags of Ghana-must-go loaded with a large sum of money and GSM handsets.”
The hoodlums, according to the eyewitness, escaped through a route that was not manned by security agents.
A special patrol team of policemen from Elekahia Police Station tried to confront the robbers but they escaped.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ben Ugwuegbulam, who confirmed the incident, said he had yet to get the full details of what happened.
He promised to speak on the matter as soon as he was briefed by the Divisional Police Officer of the area.
