Police clear sergeant alleged to be worth over N2bn

Imohimi
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Edgal Imohimi, said that the police have cleared sergeant Marcel Christopher  Nnabugwu, who was alleged to be worth over N2 billion by an unknown lady.
According to the woman, Nnabugwu also drives a car with customized number plate, known as MCON.
Police were said to have launched investigation after a video started circulating on WhatsApp by a masked woman.
The lady, who presented herself as a whistleblower, explained in the video that she masked her face because she didn’t want to endanger her life.
Speaking in the video, she said: “I don’t know what will happen to me if my face is exposed. This man, Inspector Marcel Christopher Nnabugwu, is   known   as MCON. He uses MCON as car number plate. There is nobody who goes to nightclub on Lagos Island who doesn’t know him. Immediately he enters, the place will ‘shut down.’ Just last month, this guy celebrated his 30th birthday at a club in Ikoyi and almost all the well-known rich men and celebrities were there. His house in GRA Ikeja is worth over N250 million. But let me shock you, I travelled to Owerri last week to see my uncle at Mopol 18 barrack and that was where I saw  this guy in the uniform of police sergeant, carrying AK47. If this guy is truly a police sergeant, since when have police sergeants in Nigeria started such money? But if this guy is not a police sergeant, how come he is wearing a police uniform with the rank of a sergeant and armed with AK47?”
Imohimi said that the attention of the command was drawn to the video on Tuesday.
Imohimi added: “According to the masked woman, Sergeant Nnabugwu owns a property at No. 27, Remi Fani-Kayode Street, GRA, Ikeja. She went further to estimate that the property was worth over N250, 000,000. She estimated the sergeant to worth over N2 billion. The lady requested the police authorities to investigate the sergeant’s source of wealth. She alleged that the sergeant was serving at Mopol 18 Owerri, Imo State. The allegation against the police sergeant later identified as inspector Nnabugwu is a serious one and as a responsible and accountable institution, the Nigeria Police Lagos State Command based on the directive of the Inspector General of Police, swung in to action. In the course of our investigation, the facts were laid bare.”
He disclosed that in the course of investigation, it was discovered that Nnabugwu, alias, MCON truly exists.
The said Nnabugwu enlisted into the Police Force in the year 2000 and was trained at Police College, Oji River, Enugu State.”
According to Imohimi, the officer is presently an Inspector of Police, serving at Ogudu Police Division where he is attached to Divisional Crime Branch (DCB).
The CP added: “He is not a sergeant serving at Mopol 18 Owerri as alleged. That Inspector Nnabugwu has never served in Police Mobile Force since his enlistment into the Nigeria Police. The picture of him in Police Mobile Uniform was downloaded by the masked woman from his Facebook as attested by the woman. He wore the uniform when he went for mobilization exercise into the PMF for which he was unsuccessful. He explained to us that his love of the PMF uniform made him to use it to take snapshot on that fateful day that he went for the exercise. He does not own a car or landed property in any part of Nigeria. The Inspector is a proud tenant at No.125, Old Ota Road, Oke-Odo Agege, Lagos, where he occupies a room and parlour. The Inspector is currently single due to harsh financial status. He is still gathering resources for that purpose. It was shown in the video where he was singing and dancing. The Inspector said that his hobby is singing and dancing. Investigation also revealed that Nnabugwu is the owner of Bank Verification Nigeria (BVN) and owns the following bank accounts number with corresponding balance as at June 20th, FCMB -2288247017, balance N15,000 and Access Bank- 0041131987, balance N5,000. From all intent and purpose, the lady in the mask was out to cause mischief. Her evil machination was not only targeted at the poor, innocent officer but an attempt to malign and dent the image of the Nigeria Police and bring the entire organization into public opprobrium. You can bet we are on her heels. As a matter of fact, we are closing in on her, its question of time.
Reacting to the issue, Nnabugwu said: “One of my friends on Facebook saw the post about me and alerted me. My friend wanted to find out what was really going on. I was supposed to going to my night duty on that day. I went to the station and met my Divisional Police Officer. I informed him about what was going on with my picture on Facebook. He replied that he had heard about it. He then said that the commissioner of police wanted to see me. I was brought to state command that night.
Further responding to questions that perhaps a jilted lover was after him, Nnabugwu said that he couldn’t remember having any problem with any lady. He also said that he couldn’t place the voice of the lady in the video.
Nnabugwu noted that he had a girlfriend a long time ago, when he serving with the Imo State Command 2002.
His words: “The woman was the one that disappointed me, and as a man I needed to move on with my life. I have forgotten all about that and I cannot imagine that she would be the one trying to blackmail me.”
