Policemen pose as buyers to arrest gunrunner

The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a gunrunner and recovered two Beretta pistols and an AK47 rifle.

According to the Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), a Deputy Superintendent of Police Asinim Butswat, said that the achievement came while the command was strictly adhering to the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, directives on mopping-up arms and ammunition from unauthorized people.

Butswat said: “In a coordinated covert operation, detectives from the Anti-Cultism Unit and the State Intelligence Bureau, Bayelsa State Police Command, lured a notorious gun runner, Markus Akassa, 45, from Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, under the guise of purchasing arms from him. The gunrunner was arrested along with Ekioyoufegha Agge 34, from Oboro Town, in Delta State. Agge used to introduce buyers to Akassa.”

Butswat explained that the suspects were arrested on June 16, 2018, in a hotel at Akenfa Three, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The following arms were recovered from them; one AK47 rifle and two China made Berretta pistols.

Akassa allegedly confessed that he usually travelled to the Republic of Cameroon to buy arms and ammunition in a community called Okwa, in a border town with Bakassi Peninsula.
According to him, he used to sell an AK47 rifle for N550, 000 and Berretta pistol for N250, 000 in Nigeria.

“Investigation is ongoing to recover some of the guns he earlier sold and arrest the buyers. The command appeals to members of the public to avail the police with useful information that may lead to recovery of arms from unauthorized persons,” said Butswat.
