Violence erupts as police allegedly kills cyclist in Lagos

Hundreds of workers returning from their offices today evening scampered for safety at the Oshodi area of Lagos State as gunshots rocked the night.

According to eye witnesses, commercial cyclists appeared to be protesting the alleged murder of a colleague by the police and subsequent arrest of many of their members.
It was further alleged that the rampaging members took to the roads, causing destruction, making bonfire in the middle of the road and causing gridlock.
Their numbers continued to swell as they marched towards Cappa and under bridge axis in Oshodi.
The fracas between the cyclists and police was said to have caused panic, forcing many commercial drivers to quickly close for the day.
The abrupt closure of business for the day by drivers led to many commuters being stranded at Mushin area of the metropolis.
Many of the drivers refused to go to Oshodi routes, fearful they might be caught in the crossfire between police and the cyclists.
At intervals, gunshots were heard and people are seen frantically looking for where to hide.
