Police arrest robbers who killed three policemen in Ogun


THE efforts of the Ogun State Police Command at capturing a gang of armed robbers who raided Abeokuta in early hours of Monday, killing three policemen in the process paid off as one of the robbers, who had gone to get fuel for their car was arrested.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Muyiwa Adejobi, who described the members of the robbery gang as professionals, a member of the gang, who had confessed to the crime, had been nabbed, adding that the command had commenced investigation into the robbery.
Adejobi said, "We have a suspect now because when they left, they were following Abeokuta-Lagos express way, going back to Lagos with the jeep, which they had earlier snatched for the operation.
"The gang later ran out of fuel and asked the suspect to provide them with fuel but he (the suspect) was apprehended based on intelligence report. There was not enough fuel in their jeep again and one of them had to put a call through to somebody to get fuel for them.
"One of the victims, who might have been in the car with them quickly called one of our men who quickly mobilised others to be on red alert and fortunately for us, we saw a man on a bike with fuel.
"He wanted to go and supply them fuel. So we were able to pick the man and he is going to help us a lot. He has confessed as a member of the syndicate and we are going to work on this one to get all of them.
"The GRS (Gateway Response Squad) men came to this place  and the armed men, who we believed are professionals, had laid ambush for them. They had positioned themselves strategically.
"You could see the analysis so far that bullets were coming from various angles, an indication that they must have positioned themselves very well.
"The men were attacked and we lost three of them. Two died instantly and one died on the way to the hospital. We have two of them now at the FMC. The Commissioner of Police, Mr Okoye Ikemefuna, and the state governor have visited them this morning (Monday).
On Monday, three policemen met their untimely death after they received a distress call that robbers were around the Oke-Itoku area of Abeokuta and had gone there to foil the robbery attempt.
The unsuspecting policemen who were said to be five in number met their death as the robbers numbering 15 opened fired at them.
