TWO grandparents killed by one of their grandson identified as Dekunle at N4/204, Yemetu, Adeoyo, Ibadan, Oyo State, were on Monday buried amid tears and wailings at the family compound Ibadan, as the suspect is now set to face prosecution.
Pa Busari Ogundeji, 140, and Madam Olalonpe Ganiyu,120, were on Sunday afternoon, sent to their graves by a grandson who Crime & Security learnt had mental challenges. The Yemetu Adeoyo residence of the Ogundejis became a Mecca to visitors when the news of the incident filtered into town.
On Monday morning, the family of the slain victims visited the Divisional Police station, Yemetu, Ibadan and the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Iyaganku, Ibadan, to obtain police report to enable them to bury their loved ones. According to a member of the family who pleaded anonymity "The family is not ready to embark on any legal tussle or fight over what happened. We take solace in God but police can go ahead and ensure that justice is done. It has become a government matter. We want to obtain police report and go ahead with the burial.
"The police report was to ensure that the doctors carry out autopsy on the corpses but the family has decided that we're not going to that extent. We want to bury our grandparents according to Muslim rites," said the source before the burial.
The entire community was thrown into a mourning on Sunday, when Mama Olalonpe,120, and Pa Busari Ogundeji,140, were murdered at their residence N4/204, Yemetu, Adeoyo, Ibadan by one of their grandson named Dekunle.
According to an eyewitness, the entire neighbourhood was alerted to the happening at the house when another old woman, identified simply as Iya Eleko, watched as Madam Olalonpe was being butchered and raised the alarm. The alarm from Iya Eleko drew the attention of the residents, including Pa Busari Ogundeji, who, on getting to the scene, was overpowered by Dekunle and was matcheted to death.
"I'm one of those who helped pack the corpses after the incident. Mama sustained severe cuts on her body. He also hit grandpa on the chest, head and leg. They could not have survived the incident," the eyewitness said.
Iya Eleko also had her arm injured in the process.
After achieving his aim, Dekunle was later arrested by the police and taken to Yemetu Division, Ibadan.
Dekunle, a grandchild of Pa Ogundeji, Crime & Security learnt, had been sick for over three years and was being cared for by Madam Olalonpe before the Sunday incident.
