Three policemen were yesterday mowed down by a gang of robbers in a convoy, at the Abule-Egba area of Lagos State.
The Nigerian Compass gathered that residents of Abule-Egba, Oko-Oba, Oke-Odo and other environs were rudely shaken out of their sleep by heavy shootings which rocked the areas at about 2am.
The robbers killed three policemen and made disappeared with their guns. The slain policemen comprised an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, an Inspector and a corporal.
The bandits were said to have been in a convoy, with a sienna bus in the lead, while about two other buses followed behind.
It is believed that the robbers were returning from operations, when they ran into the three policemen at Oke-Odo and Oko-Oba axis respectively and opened fire on them.
After making sure the policemen were dead, the robbers made away with their rifles.
Two among the slain policemen were attached to Oko-Oba Police Station.
The Assistant superintendent of police (ASP) and Inspector were both attached to Oko-Oba Police station, while the third policeman, a corporal, was attached to Oke-Odo Police Station.
The ASP has been identified as Funmi Niyi, while the Inspector is simply identified as Haruna. The name of the third policeman is yet unknown.
A police source said: “The robbers were in three vehicles, but a sienna bus was in the lead. They were in a convoy. The robbers should be up to 20, all armed with guns. The policemen they killed were returning from bank visiting.  Bank visiting is when policemen go to different banks to check whether their men, who are supposed to be guarding those banks are on duty.”
Attempts made to get the police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, to confirm the incident was not successful, as the man who picked her call, said she was occupied in a seminar.
