Irawo Adamolekun |
Friends of Dr. Irawo
Adamolekun, who was killed in Lagos traffic on Friday by a gunman on
motorcycle, held a candle-light procession for him on Wednesday.
The walk held simultaneously in Lagos and Abuja and lasted for almost two hours.
The Lagos procession began from Military Hospital, Awolowo Road, to Falomo while the one in Abuja was held in Wuse.
Adamolekun’s former classmates and co-workers attended the Lagos procession.
His friends were clad in
black t-shirts with the inscription, “Irawo Isaac Adamolekun, 1986-2012,
Rest in Peace our shining star.’
They sang hymns and songs of praise, describing him as a sociable and forgiving soul.
One of them, Saleh
Adakole, who attended the same university with the deceased, said,
“Irawo and I both attended North American University, Houdegbe.
“He was a doctor that was
willing to give back to society and even offered his services at the
last National Sports Festival. It’s sad that Nigeria has lost a star.
“Irawo even told me that he was going to do Masters in Sports Medicine which tells you that he was focused.”
Amnuel Mdebe said he and the deceased had planned to share an apartment together.
He said, “I didn’t know
Irawo for too long. However, I am his sister’s friend. I was looking for
accommodation when someone introduced me to him.
“Irawo said I could come and live with him but we would have to share the rent together. It’s unbelievable that he is no more.”
Another friend, Naasha
Enjoh, said even after Irawo’s brother, Imole Adamolekun, died in a road
accident in 2004, the slain doctor remained optimistic.
Our correspondent learnt that Irawo would be buried on Thursday (today).
Meanwhile, the state police command has vowed to fish out Irawo’s killer.
The spokesperson for the
state police command, Ngozi Braide, in a statement said, “We sympathise
with the family of late Dr. Irawo Adamolekun whose life was cut short on
January 11, 2013. The command has vowed to leave no stone unturned in
fishing out the culprits of the dastardly act.
“Investigation has
commenced and we appeal to members of the public to come forth with
useful information that can assist the police in unraveling this heinous
crime.”
