LG crisis: Clerk beaten by colleagues in Benue

Crisis broke out at Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State as the clerk of the council’s legislative arm was beaten by four members of the legislative council.

The members, according to information, perceived that the clerk of the house had been shortchanging them in the scheme of things and decided to give him the beating of his life.

The Nigerian Tribune gathered that the four members, last weekend, went wild, when they said they were allegedly denied their dues and reportedly engaged the clerk of the House in an argument that degenerated into violence resulting in their being dragged to the Police in Okpokwu.

It was gathered that the case was later transferred to the Police Area Command at Otukpo where the Area Commander, Mr Samuel Darakoji, acceded to the demands of some persons who came to intervene and gave the legislators one week to settle the matter amicably.

Reacting to the development, the council chairman, Juliana Obetta expressed displeasure over the incident and called for calm, stressing that crisis would hinder the progress of the council area.

She urged the legislators to embrace dialogue in settling their differences, assuring that the executive would do all it could to assist the legislature to deliver on its mandate to the electorate.
