Police to harness e-technology to fight crime –IGP

Worried by the security challenges in the country, the Nigerian police said they would be investing more in the acquisition of electronic security devices in a bid to curb crime and restore peace and normalcy to troubled spots in the country. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar, who stated this while receiving 3, 000 police stands and patrol vehicles by Mikano International Limited in Lagos at the weekend said greater effort was being made by the police to grow its crime fighting arsenal with state-of-the art equipment.
Abubakar listed some of the core challenges facing the police to include insufficient sophisticated crime fighting equipment and assured that the Nigerian police was however boosting its equipment to deliver better results to the society. “We are in the world of modernisation, so the police needs to catch up with modern equipment, to meet global standards,” Abubakar said, stressing that amid all the challenges the police of today had improved in service delivery from what was obtainable in the past.
Abubakar thanked Mikano for the gesture, promising that the traffic stands and vehicles would be judiciously used, noting that the facilities would motivate the police to serve the public better. The IGP also urged other private individuals and corporate bodies to emulate Mikano by supporting the police in its quest to curb crime.
Chairman of the company, Mofid Karameh, said the organisation was aware that police personnel in Nigeria worked under severe weather conditions like the scorching sun and heavy rain and therefore required good shelter facilities while serving. Karameh said the donation to the Police cost the company about N150 million.
