THE Nigeria Union of Pharmacists, Medical Technologists and
Professions Allied to Medicine (NUPMTPAM) has vowed to paralyse all
medical activities in all the teaching hospitals across the country by
May 2, if their five demands at a meeting held with government
representatives on March 21, 2013 in Abuja were not met.
This disclosure was made by the national secretary of NUPMTPAM, Mr Felix Faniran, while addressing journalists at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, on the heels of the crisis between the local NUPMTPAM chapter and the management of the UCH.
Faniran alleged that the problem being encountered by the UCH chapter of the NUPMTPAM was a product of the failure of the Federal Government to implement the memorandum of understanding reached at a meeting held at the instance of the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, the Joint Health Sectors Unions (JOHESU), the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.
In a joint address with the chairman, UCH chapter of NUPMTPAM, Mr Olusegun Sotiloye, Faniran said as long as the Federal Government failed to implement the agreement, the union members were ready to agitate for their rights.
Parts of the demands of the union were the implementation of committee report, which was due to for consideration by the Federal Executive Council (FEC); conduct of promotion exercise; 2008 job evaluation, review of retirement age and an appeal for the “areas of flexibility in the enabling Act.”
In another development, Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), University College Hospital, Ibadan, has said the deputy chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Laboratory Services of the hospital, Dr Kayode Adedapo, is qualified to hold the office of Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (DMAC)
It will be recalled that the appointments of deputy chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (DMAC) is causing ripples in the UCH, a reason for the ongoing seven-day warning strike.
Led by its chairman, Professor Juwon Tunde Arotiba, MDCAN, while speaking with journalist in Ibadan, on Monday, said it had noticed “reports in various news media of statements credited to some paramedical associations on the administrative structure in the UCH, Ibadan.
The statements specifically questioned the leadership of clinical services in the hospital, with emphasis on Clinical Laboratory (Pathology) Services.
He added that different professional groups working together in the clinical laboratories had the common goal of improving the overall health status and welfare of the patient.
The roles, which he described as well-defined, were complementary, and not conflicting, adding that “a core competence of laboratory physicians is clinical liaison.”
