Over 25 people were reported to have died of flood-related
diseases in Ibaji/Idah and Igalamela Odolu local governments areas of
Kogi State.
The affected communities in the local government are Odogwu-Ibaji, Itoduma, Ajum and Egabad.
While receiving the programme officer of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and newsmen during the post-flood assessment to the riverine communities in the local government, Simon Elemuda, who spoke on the behalf of Odogwu-Ibaji community, said 18 people died in the village as a result of post flood related diseases.
He said out of the 18 people, 10 children died of measles and diarrhoea while eight who were adults died of malaria and typhoid.
According to him, N150,000 was given to the community as flood relief fund while each household got N1,500. Women he said, were left out because the fund was grossly inadequate.
The spokesperson of Itoduma community, Gabriel Abara, said over seven persons, including their head, Chief Udolor Echekwe died of post-flood related diseases. Echekwe, according to him, died of hypertension.
He explained that N356,500 was given to the community by the government as relief fund, while each household got N1,700.
According to Sunday Usman, the Gago of Ajum village in Idah Local Government Area, some of the flood victims in the community were given N11,000 while others received nothing.
