THE Olofin of Ado-Odo, Oba Lateef Akanni Adeniran, on Monday,
was said to have been beaten up by some hoodlums suspected to be
loyalists of his rival, over chieftaincy tussle rocking the town.
It will be recalled that no fewer than 10 lives had been lost over the crisis.
The traditional ruler, despite a Supreme Court judgment validating his appointment three years ago, had been having a running battle with some interest groups in the town.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the angry mob waylaid the Sport Utility Vehicle of the traditional ruler, who was reported to have been returning from a neighbouring town of Ilaro in Ogun State.
The vehicle was said to have been flagged down by the angry youth, while the unsuspecting traditional ruler reportedly alighted from it to listen to their grievances.
A source, who preferred anonymity, informed the Nigerian Tribune that the action of the angry mob could not be unconnected to an alleged nonchalant attitude of the traditional ruler towards an accident victim who was reported to have been hit by one of his vehicles.
Pandemonium broke out when the rioters stormed the palace, unleashed terror on people and destroyed property worth undisclosed amount of money.
“It was on his way from Ilaro that some of the rioters saw him and beat him up before they tore his garment. He luckily escaped death by whiskers,” a source said.
The source also confirmed that the traditional ruler had been hospitalised, following degree of injuries he sustained.
Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi, said the command was on top of the situation.
Adejobi added that the state Police Commissioner, Mr Okoye Ikemefuna, was in the town to ensure the maintenance of law and order.
Meanwhile, the state government has urged the people of Ado-Odo to maintain peace and shun any act of destruction.
Addressing the people of the area, the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Muyiwa Oladipo, after an on-the-spot assessment tour to determine the extent of damage, said government would not condone any act of lawlessness.
