Association
of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, University College
Hospital, Ibadan, has warned the hospital management against the
imposition of a non professional as head of laboratory services.
The union gave the warning on Thursday
while reacting to the management’s decision to appoint the deputy
Chairman, MAC (Laboratory) as the hospital’s Director of Laboratory
Services.
Chief Medical Director, UCH, Prof.
Temitope Alonge, in a letter dated on March 20, addressed to the
association, said, “In line with the current reform in the Ministry of
Health and the UCH, the deputy Chairman MAC positions should be service
related.
“To this effect, the deputy Chairman MAC
(Laboratory) will be referred to as deputy Chairman MAC, laboratory
and Director of Laboratory Services with immediate effect”.
However, the association, led by its
first Vice-President, Alhaji Raheem Toyosi, disagreed with the
management over the issue. He said, “The problem between our association
and the management of UCH has to do with inconsistency of the
management with the provision of law.
“In the first place there is no
provision for the position of CMAC in decree 10 of 1985 that establishes
the teaching hospital. The management of UCH is not above the law. The
position of the director of laboratory should be occupied by a
laboratory scientist.”
