NO fewer than 300 houses were destroyed by the torrential rain that
ravaged four local government areas of Plateau State at the weekend.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that in Kanam Local Government, the flood
washed away large expanse of farmlands and livestock, while some people
are still searching for their loved ones.
The rain, which started around 5.00 p.m. on Friday, lasted till
Saturday morning in Jos North, Kanam, Barakin-Ladi and Shendam Local
Government Areas.
Confirming the incident, the Executive Secretary of the State
Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Alhaji Alhassan Barde, said he was
yet to receive the accurate figures of the houses destroyed and those
killed by the flood, adding that the agency was still investigating and
compiling the number of those affected.
He said,“as I am speaking to you, I am still doing on-the-spot
assessment of the affected areas and would give you the exact figures
after the assessment but I can tell you that many residential buildings
were affected.
He advised the people of the state especially those living along
waterways to be vigilant and take proactive steps to curb flooding,
adding that the agency was making concerted efforts to alleviate the
sufferings of those affected by last weekend’s flood.
