Daredevil robbers yesterday at the Ijora area of Lagos State, attacked
a team of policemen, instantly killing three policemen, while
inflicting deadly bullet wound on another policeman.
The policemen, who were on patrol duty, were said to have chanced upon
the robbers who were operating on commercial motorbike when all hell
broke loose.
It was gathered that the robbers had opened fire, shooting
sporadically immediately they caught sight of the patrol van of the
police team.
The policemen were five in the patrol van. Three of them died
instantly, one was injured, but the driver had a narrow escape. He was
completely unhurt. The policemen were attached to Area C Police
Command, Surulere.
The corpses of the three policemen, were later taken to the Iponri
Police Station, while their injured colleague was rushed to a
hospital, where is presently fighting to stay alive.
One of the policemen was said to have fired at one of the robbers who
also died at the spot.
A police source explained that wounded officer, narrating how they
were attacked, said that the robbers were all wearing nice looking
caftan clothes and looked responsible, it was not until the bandits
started raining bullets on them that they realised they had walked
into the mouth of an operation.
The source further revealed that at Ijora Olopa area of the
metropolis, where the incident occurred, a fully loaded pump action
gun was recovered at the scene.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Prince Umar Manko, confirmed
the story, adding that the police were in a patrol vehicle and were
shot from behind by the robbers.
The police boss revealed that suspects who were three on one
motorcycle and dressed in caftan, took advantage of the rain fall and
shot the policemen while they were on their legitimate duty around
Ijora-Olopa.
According to him, the men were five inside the patrol vehicle when the
incident occurred.
He said three police men were killed, while one was injured, but the
driver was unhurt. He said that the policemen were attached to Area
'C' Police Command Surulere, adding that investigation had commenced
as he had ordered the Officer in charge of the State Anti-Robbery
(SARS), Mr. Abba kyarri to fish-out the suspected armed robbers.
