The Lagos State Commissioner of
Police, Prince Umar Manko had ordered the immediate arrest of a Police Corporal
for shooting a father of three to death.
The trigger happy policeman,
identified as Corporal Emejo Gabriel, attached to Shogule Police Station,
allegedly killed Mr. Azeez Omotosho, 35, right in front of his home.
The killing of Omotosho, a father of
three, with the last child still a baby, provoked anger among the youths in the
area, who staged a protest to the station.
The angry youths allegedly attempted
to set the police station ablaze but were repelled by policemen on duty.
The youths however refused to budge until
they were told that the killer cop had been arrested, disarmed and taken to
Area F, Ikeja, on the orders of the Commissioner of Police.
Sherifat Omotosho, wife of the
deceased, a nursing mother, stared repeatedly into the space and asked “Who
will take care of my children now?”
Sherifat said: “The incident
happened around 9pm. My husband saw policemen stopped the car of his friend’s
brother, Samson, j in front of our house and he went to intervene. I told my
husband not to intervene but he said he knew the policeman. My husband did not
even switch off the engine of his vehicle. We all alighted and entered into our
compound and suddenly we heard a gunshot.”
The gun shot compelled them to race outside
the house again. The policeman touched my husband who was on the floor. Crying earnestly
Sherifat said: “When he saw that my husband was still breathing, he shot him
again. The remaining policemen fled while the killer held unto someone and
wanted to frame the person.”
Aishat Omotosho, sister to the
deceased, said that government should make sure that Omotosho’s corpse was
released to enable them go for proper Muslim burial.
Her words: “This is not the first time
policemen will be killing people and it has become too common. The government
must stop!”|
