Three years after the Court of Appeal, Ibadan Division, upheld a N20
million judgment against the Nigeria Police for aggravated assault by
its officials against Adebayo Olaide, the 37 years old victim of
brutality, who has become blind due to the assault, is still waiting for
his compensation.
Yet, in a twist of fate, the police officers who descended on him
with sticks and the butts of their guns around Alagbayun, near Odo Oba
in Ogo Oluwa Local Government Area of Oyo State in 2009, have been
promoted while their victim, Adebayo, has had to withdraw from the
College of Education, Ila Oragun, where he was a 300 level student when
the incident happened.
“I won’t lie to you, today I am a beggar”, he told our reporter
during the week in Ilorin, Kwara state. “I go from one place to the
other to get something to survive”, he said, lamenting that he spent one
week begging to gather the N1,500 needed to get his family of four to
Ilorin, from Ogbomosho when told some newsmen were interested in his
story. His Pastor in Ogbomosho as well as his mother-in law, he noted,
had been the major help for his survival. “When my children are sick, it
is the Pastor and my mother-in-law that helps us”.https://newtelegraphonline.com/3-years-court-victory-victim-police-assault-awaits-compensation/
