The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, yesterday said that he would not be distracted by anyone in his fight against corruption in Nigeria.
Speaking at a rally to mark the world
corruption day, Monday in Lagos, Magu said that he would ensure there was no
place for corrupt people in Nigeria.
The EFCC boss, who was represented by the
Head of Operations, Lagos Office, Mr. Garuba Dugum, said that if anyone thought
that corruption, which had become a monster in Nigeria, would be allowed to
continue to grow, the person must be joking.
He added: “Especially, when we realized the
volume of public funds as well as assets that had found their way into some
private hands. No one among us here can feign ignorance of the damage that
corruption has done to the image of the country. The reason is not far-fetched.
We have allowed the culture of impunity to flower for too long. But be assured
that it is not going to be business as usual any more. As stakeholders in this
renewed onslaught against corruption, I urge you not to be disillusioned.
“It is worrisome that many have foreclosed
the possibility of a corruption-free Nigeria. But I urge you to always have a
positive attitude towards the anti-corruption war and embrace some of the new
efforts, including the whistle-blowing policy of the President Muhammadu
Buhari-led administration, to break the corruption chain.”
Dugum said that he believed that among
those gathered at the rally, are part of those that wanted the corruption chain
to be broken.
He noted: “As the leading anti-graft Agency
in the country, the EFCC, under our leadership, will continuously proclaim its
zero tolerance for corruption and economic crimes, which is the bane of
development of the country. This, no doubt, shows that the EFCC is not ready to
halt its aggressive campaign against corruption.”
He said that Nigerians are living witnesses
to the unfortunate campaigns of calumny and sponsored media attacks on the
leadership of the EFCC.
He stressed that such sponsored campaigns,
wouldn’t stop him from his determination to bring looters of Nigeria’s treasury
and economy to book through the might of the judicial system.
He added: “You and I know that there is so
much rot in the system as a result of endemic corruption. But you will agree
with me; there can’t be any more auspicious time to wrestle the menace to
submission. In order words, no more will corruption be treated with kid
gloves. I thank you all for being willing partners in this drive to free our country
from the vice-like grip of undisciplined elements who do wish to see the
country prosper. Together, we shall defeat them. Together, we shall win this
war and Nigeria will be great again.”
