#ENDSARS: SARS operatives, Mopol officers trained on human rights violations


Following the outcry of Nigerians against the activities of personnel of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad (SARS), a nongovernmental organization, has embarked on training some of them human rights violations.
The three days training with a ,  ‘To Curb Human Rights Violation by SARS and Mobile Police' was organised by  Nigerian Police Force in partnership with  PRAWAAS and supported by GIZ held in Lagos over the weekend.
The Executive Director of PRAWA, Dr. Uju Agomoh, said that the current leadership of the Nigerian Police Force, has shown serious interest in curbing the incessant gross violations of human rights, which had been severally reported against policemen.
The police authorities, worried by the increasing complaints, requested the human rights implementation team to organise the retreat.
She said: “It was because of human rights abuses that prompted the training to address the problems and restore public confidence in SARS and Mobile force. The training is also to reduce occurrences of human rights abuses. To promote and sensitized officers of SARS, Mobile force and other staff of relevant units of the criminal Investigation department on human right and good police practice.”
Mr. Emmanuel Enang, Deputy Inspector General of Police, in charge of training said: “The purpose of the training is to bring together key officers of criminal investigation department and other relevant department to strategize with the police on human right training, national rollout implementation plan and approach.”
DIG Enang said that in the course of the retreat, the participants’ identified the problems confronting the mobile force and SARS officers.
He enumerated some of the challenges confronting them are poor orientation, poor funding/ welfare, poor intelligence led policing, lack of capacity building and corruption among the officers.
Enang further said that participants, after due consideration, recommended that  SARS and mobile policemen should serve mandatory 36 months and move on to other department, procedure for mobilisation and demobilization of  SARS and Mobile Police  personnel should be strictly adhered to.
He added: “Human right training should be conducted for SARS officers, Mobile Police, Counter Terrorism Unit, Special Protection Unit, Special Tactical Squad and Intelligence Response Team to restore respect for human right.”
