Irate youths burnt down the house of a local vigilante commander in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government area of Anambra State, following the alleged murder of a 27-year-old Mr. Ndubisi Oye.
According to sources, Oye, an indigene of Ezza,
Ebonyi State, was returning from a meeting with his fiancée when he was shot
and killed by the vigilante commander along St. Monica's Road, Ogbunike.
Oye’s fiancée, Miss Olumma Agbugba, from Imo State,
said the incident took place around 9.30 pm on Sunday.
Her words: "My fiancé went to buy fuel; he was
about to drive off, when a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) crossed our bus. A man
came down from the vehicle and ordered both of us to step out from our bus. I
noticed that the man had a gun. I wanted to make a call, but he stopped me. He
threatened to kill me if I made any more attempts to call again. The man shot
my fiancé at close range, and immediately drove off, leaving him in a pool of blood.”
Agbugba immediately raised the alarm, attracting
attention of passersby. Those that stopped to assist her, moved Oye to Iyienu Hospital.
She said that Oye died on the way to the hospital.
She said: "Some of the Ebonyi people living in
Ogbunike, on hearing what happened, went on the rampage in the early hours of
Monday, setting the house of Oye’s killer on fire. We later got to know that he
is a local vigilante commander. The protesters also set his three cars on fire."
The Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth
Mobilisation, Junior Onwutaka, an indigene of the community, said he saw some
men on the rampage and tried unsuccessfully to stop them, but they overpowered
him. He confirmed that the mob invaded the commander's house and set it on fire.
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Garba Umar,
said his policemen had intervened and
arrested the suspect.
He added: “ The suspect is in our custody. We
ordered for his arrest and the arrest of those that burnt his property.”
