A security guard, Ogunseunwo Ademola, 30, attached to Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu, Lagos State (LASPOTECH), has been arrested for shooting an expelled student of the institution to death.
Fielding questions from our
correspondent on why he shot and killed Amowo Hammed, Ademola said: “I was just
doing my job as a security officer. I have been working with the school for
over two years now. The worst part of the matter is that some of these cultists
are not students of our school. They come from other schools to terrorise our
students and lecturers.”
Ademola was arrested
along with Rilwanu Adewale and Aiyewumi Daniel. Ademola explained that it was
because of incessant and escalating cult activities, that the school management
equipped them with double barrel guns.
Recollecting the
incident that led to the death of Hammed, Ademola said: “On February 21, I was
on duty when I suddenly noticed students and lecturers running up and down in
the school compound. I saw some of boys that belonged to cult groups in the
area. They were inside the campus and were terrorizing everyone. I and other
security officers, were able to catch some of the boys. As we were questioning
them, to know their mission in the school and also to retrieve some of the
property they had collected from some students, Amowo Hammed, escaped. We ordered
him to stop, but he refused; I then shot his leg.”
The LASPOTECH spokesman,
Mr Olanrewaju Kuye, explained that on the fateful day in question, some
students alerted the institution’s security personnel that cult members had
invaded the school.
Kuye said: “The security
officers had to chase the cult members out of the campus; but when they got
there, they discovered another set of cult groups approaching from the
adjourning village to attack our students. Upon sighting our security men, the cultists
began to shoot at will. Our security men had no choice but to retaliate. Bullet got one of the cultists
later identified as Amowo Hammed. He was a former student of our school. He was
expelled over examination malpractice.”
The school spokesman
added that but for the prompt response of the institution’s security personnel,
many students could have lost their lives in the attack.
Kuye said that although
the school management was making effort to get Ademola released from police
custody, he and the management also realized that the police must be allowed to
do their job.
The Lagos State Commissioner
of Police, Edgal Imohimi said that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), in
charge of Shagamu Road Divisional
Headquarters, received a distressed call that Ademola, attached to Lagos State
Polytechnic Security Department shot and killed Hammed, a suspected cultist
which made other members to go on the rampage.
Imohimi said: “Rilwanu Adewale and Aiyewumi Daniel were
arrested with the combined efforts of SARS Ikorodu and local vigilante group
based in Ikorodu. One locally made double barrel gun was recovered from the
cultists. They confessed that the gun belonged to their group leader, aka Clear,
now at large. The case is under investigation. The suspects will soon be charged
to court.”
