‘In our gang, we must rob every member’s community’

Mr Ibrahaim Yahaya, a self-confessed leader of gang of motorcycle robbers, has revealed that one of the decrees of the gang is that every member’s community must be robbed.

Yahaya, who is admitted joining crime out of anger, said that he had always planned to be an upright person, but changed his mind and took to crime after his motorcycle was stolen.
His words: “I’m the leader of the gang. I was formerly a commercial motorcycle rider. I stopped after my motorcycle was stolen.  I got angry and formed this gang.  We started by stealing motorcycles from people’s homes, moving them away from where they were parked. Later, we went on to start mounting road blocks at night to rob cyclists. We moved to several areas in Abuja to carry out operations. Every member of our gang has an obligation to take us to his area for an operation. When we went to Kuje, we spent two days. Gidado was the person who led us in the operation. We stole over six motorcycles from that area.  We also went to Tafa, and it was that led us in that operation. We stole 12 motorcycles in the community within three days. After stealing a motorcycle, we would take it out of that area; in the morning, we will take it to our waiting buyers.  We did this all over Abuja. I don’t know how police learned about our activities, but they came after us and arrested us.”
The gang was smashed by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, (IRT), at the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
The suspects are Ibrahaim Yahaya, Samalia Akali, Gidado Gusau, Musa Usman and Rabiu Isah.
The police said that the suspects confessed to have stolen no fewer than 55 motorcycles from different locations in FCT. Each of the motorcycles was sold between N80, 00 to N60, 000.
Police sources disclosed that the gang ran into trouble after members of Motorcycle Riders’ Associations within the FCT alerted them about series of stolen and snatched motorcycles, leading to IRT swinging into action. The investigation was led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari.
Yahaya was arrested when one of his major receivers, within the FCT, was trailed and arrested.
Yahaya led the IRT in arresting four other members of his gang.
