Detectives attached to Ogun State Police
Command have arrested three suspects, who allegedly specialised in stealing
children from their unsuspecting parents in the state.
The suspects are Kate Njoku, Joy Okorie and
Onyeka Joseph. They were arrested after successfully stealing eight children
from in different parts of Lagos. At least three among the children have been
rescued.
It was gathered that the suspects allegedly
used to pretend to be a couple, seeking accommodation. They allegedly used to
target apartments in buildings and community that has plenty of children.
The suspects succeeded in stealing eight
children from different locations across the state. The children were sold to
their prospective buyers in Anambra State, consequent upon which the command
launched a manhunt for members of the syndicate.
The Command Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO),
DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said: “The Anti-kidnapping/Cultism Unit of the
command was given the mandate to track down the syndicate. The Unit embarked on
a high technical investigation, which paid off as the principal suspect, Mary
Paul, was tracked to Ondo State where she is presently on trial and remanded in
prison custody.”
Oyeyemi said that through synergy with Ondo
State Police Command, relevant information was extracted, leading to the arrest
of three other members of the gang. The image maker disclosed that the three
suspects were directly involved in the stealing of eight children across Ogun
State. He further said that three out of those eight stolen children had been
retrieved.
He said: "One of the children recovered
from the suspects, Temidayo Ajayi, who was abducted with his brother in
Sagamu since July 2018, has been reunited with his parents. Efforts are on to
recover his brother from the gang. The suspects have all made useful statements
to the Police on how they stole the children and sold them to their accomplices
in Anambra State."
Oyeyemi said that the Ogun State Commissioner
of Police, Bashir Makama, has ordered a thorough investigation of the case. The
CP appealed to parents to take the security of their children with seriousness.
