The kingpin of the kidnappers, who identified himself as Jideofor Ogbue, a.k.a Marvellous, 22, revealed that with the aid of the palace messenger, one Victor Chiejine Onochie, who is a member of the gang, the kidnappers infiltrated the palace, but knew that it would be difficult to convince Prof. Kanene Okonjo to leave her palace without a struggle.
Marvellous was arrested in Port Harcourt after he had perfected plans to proceed to Awka, in Anambra State same day to kidnap the Honourable Commissioner of Commerce, Anambra State.
Recollecting how Prof. Kanene was abducted, Marvellous said: “We were able to enter the palace with the help of Victor. Victor works in the palace. When we saw the woman, we told her that her daughter, Dr. Ngozi Okon Iweala had been arrested for embezzlement, that President Good luck Jonathan wanted to see her immediately, to ask her some questions about her all she knew about her daughter’s crime. She followed us immediately.”
The gang said they collected N13m as ransom before they allowed Prof Kanene to go.
The gang also confessed to being responsible for the killing of one Mrs. Regina Obi Dainty, 75, who was kidnapped and killed in Delta State, after they had collected a ransom of N2m from members of her family.
According to them, the old woman was killed because one of the members in a blind shot her at close range, after he discovered that policemen had killed his brother. The said brother is also one of the kidnappers.
Though police are spreading their tentacles across the nation, in search of the various members, after intelligence report hinted that they have a spread out network, but those presently in the Lagos State Police Command custody are; Marvellous, 22, Michael Ojeabulu, 23, Endurance Oke, 22, Ibrahim Abubakar, 28, Buhari Hamadora, 27, Hassan Oseni, 29, Chiejine Onochie Victor, 32 and Chukwuma OKoh, 31.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Prince Umar Abubakar, said that the arrest of gang members, after the initial arrest of Chiejine Onochie Victor and Chukwuman Okoh.
He stated: “Sequel to the arrest of the Chiejine Onochie and Okoh on March 27, 2013, by men of Special Intelligence Bureau(SIB), Lagos State Police Command and their subsequent confessions that they gave the information in December 2012, which led to the kidnap of the mother Minister of Finance Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala in Delta State, among many other kidnappings, I directed the Officer in Charge of Special Anti-robbery Squad(SARS), Ikeja, SP. Abba Kyari to go after the kidnappers, especially Marvellous who is the gang leader.
“Kyari expanded his tracking network and deployed three SARS decoy teams to Delta, Edo and Rivers States, which eventually led to the arrest Marvellous. He was arrested in his hideout in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on April, 2, 2013. Also, five more members of the gang were arrested at different locations in Edo, Enugu, Delta and Anambra States.
“They confessed to the kidnappings, including the most recent one, where the victim, an elderly woman, one Mrs. Regina Obi Dainty was killed by the kidnappers after collecting N2m ransom.
