8 killed, many injured in Kano school boming •1 suspect arrested

PANDEMONIUM broke out, on Monday, at the School of Hygiene, Kano, when a bomb exploded, claiming no fewer than eight persons and leaving many people, mostly students, injured.
A suspect was, however, arrested at the scene and, according to the state police spokesman, Magaji Majiya, he is currently helping the police in their investigation.

The incident occurred around 2.05 p.m. on Monday, when most of the students were outside their lecture rooms, preparing for another lecture.
A source, who preferred anonymity, said a Fulani woman selling “Nunu” to students in the school, alongside about eight vehicles parked inside the premises, were affected in the incident.
According to a student, Yahaya Suleiman, the bomb might have been planted on the school premises before the arrival of students for lectures on Monday.

Those who sustained varying degrees of injury are currently receiving treatment at Murtala Muhammed Hospital and other nearby hospitals, while the remains of the dead victims had been deposited at the hospital morgue.
Speaking on the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Aderenle Shinaba, said eight people lost their lives to the explosion, while the police had arrested a suspect.
He further disclosed that the number of those that sustained injuries could not yet be ascertained, but added that security operatives had cordoned off the affected area.
The personal assistant to the provost of the institution, Malam Abulkarim, said he heard the explosion when he left the mosque after prayers.
The school authorities, it was gathered, had instructed students to vacate the school premises, which academic activities had been put on hold.
As of the time of filing this report, security operatives had blocked the road leading to the area.
