Bullion van snatching: Robbers overwhelmed us, say police
Three days after daredevil armed robbers snatched a bullion van, police in Delta State yesterday said they had recovered the empty.
The police also recovered two Hilux pick up vans with registration number FR 985 LSR and PF 1628 SPY, 343 expanded AK47 ammunition and two magazines with 60 rounds of AK47 live ammunition.
The robbers, numbering over 15, had three days ago laid ambush on Benin- Asaba Expressway by Edo/Ogwashi- Uku at Ubulu-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government Area and snatched the van carrying an undisclosed amount of money. The bullion van was on cash transit from one of the new generation banks in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Asaba, the state capital.
The state Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Celestina Kalu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said in a statement issued in Asaba yesterday that though the command mobilised patrol teams to the scene, the robbers still gained the upper hand. She said: “They (policemen) successfully rescued the bank escort team.
They squarely engaged the hoodlums in a fierce gun duel but were unfortunately overwhelmed by the hoodlums’ superior fire power and their staggering numbers.” According to her, the two escort vehicles attached to the bullion van were badly riddled with bullets, while the attackers escaped with undisclosed amount of money.
“A team of Base 5 Counter-Terrorist Unit (CTU) personnel returning from Ekiti State on Special Duty and whose vehicle arrived the scene in the course of the gun duel also aided the bank escort team to engage the hoodlums. “One of the CTU personnel was fatally wounded while others with serious bullet wounds were rushed to the hospital for medical treatment,” Kalu said.
The PPRO disclosed that police had stepped up investigation into the matter, adding that a Toyota Highlander and a Camry car, with registration number JJJ 16 XJ, which was allegedly snatched and used as a getaway car by the hoodlums, was recovered at Idumuje Ugboko, a village near the scene of the attack. She appealed to public-spirited individuals to furnish the command with useful information concerning the incident.
