Some gunmen have shot and killed a National Youth Service Corps
(NYSC) member serving in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, four months to his
passing out.
The corps member, James Onuh, was said to have been shot below the abdomen by the gunmen while walking along the road.
The 28-year-old Onuh was said to be the first child of his parents. He was shot about 8:30p.m. on Friday after leaving a friend’s place at the ‘Corpers’ Lodge’. According to a source, the friend Onuh went to visit asked him to pass the night at his place but the deceased refused.
A witness claimed that before Onuh died, he was saying: “I didn’t do anything to them.” The gunmen disappeared immediately they shot the corps member. Onuh, with NYSC state Code BY/15B/2910, graduated from Benue State University, Markurdi, where he studied Civil Engineering.
Revealing how Onuh was killed, a lady who pleaded anonymity, said: “After the Community Development Service (CDS) on Friday June 3, he went to visit his friend at Community Secondary School (CSS), Okutukutu. He left the place about 7:30p.m. to his place called Obelle Ovum area in Yenagoa.
It was not up to 30 minutes that he left the lodge that we received a call from security department that James had been shot and already at the nearest hospital.” The lady added that Onuh was attempting to cross the road, when the bullet hit him.
The lady, who denied that Onuh was a cult member, described him as a coolheaded man. She said: “James could not hurt a fly. He was always indoors. He was not the outgoing guy.” Onuh was said to have been shot at a police checkpoint.
The policemen said to be at vicinity were said to have rushed him to the hospital. Onuh, however, died while doctors were battling to extract bullets from him at Guruva Consultant Hospital, close to High Court, Yenagoa.
“Onuh died about 1a.m. on Saturday at the theatre while doctors were battling to remove the bullets. After he was shot, he managed to cross to the other side of the road where some security personnel took him to the hospital,” the source said. At press time, NYSC officials were preparing to take Onuh’s body to Benue State, where family members were waiting.
When contacted on the phone, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Asinim Boswat, confirmed Onuh’s killing. He said: “Onuh was hit by stray bullet from cult members at Obele Street.”
The PPRO said the corps member died at the hospital where he was rushed to.He also said no arrest had been made in connection with the killing.
