Ibadan fire hazard: Residents demand N75m compensation from Total

RESIDENTS of Omitowoju/Inalende area of Ibadan, Oyo State, have petitioned a petroleum firm, Total Petroleum Plc, over the fire incident which affected over 60 houses in the area, demanding N750 million compensation.

The residents, through a letter written on their behalf by their solicitor, Akintayo Akinbola of Adunola Chambers, a copy of which was made available to the Nigerian Tribune said the inferno caused a major disruption to the existence of the people, especialy its clients in the neighbourhood.

“Our clients have informed us, the fact which was well publicised in various national dailies that on April 22, 2013 at about 6.30 p.m, a petrol laden tanker belonging to your company, marked LAG XJ 288 SMK, negligently and without due care drove along the area and resultantly fell off the road, thereby spilling off its contents which immediately exploded and caused major destruction of their properties.

“Our clients maintain further that the aforesaid inferno, in the process of being contained, gave room to some hoodlums and miscreants to loot some shops in the area. It is also a fact that three vehicles and a motor cycle were destroyed in the inferno.

“It is without gainsaying that our clients suffered extensive psychological and emotional trauma from the fact that majority of them have been rendered homeless, jobless and, in fact, had to recourse to relatives and kinsmen for clothing and feeding.

“We are, therefore, by this letter, demanding that you pay our clients through our firm a modest sum of N750,000,000, which is the estimated cost of  rebuilding the houses affected by the fire disaster, replacing some of the personal chattels and shop wares destroyed by the inferno and also assuaging, to some extent, our traumatised clients,” the letter stated.
