The celebration of Eid-el-Kabir turned bloody in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital yesterday when a violent clash erupted at the residence of Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Alhaji AbdulAzeez Arisekola between members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
About 20 people were said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries in the clash as the PDP supporters were beaten black and blue by the NURTW boys The clash, according to sources, occurred when PDP members on the entourage of the former Senate leader, Senator Teslim Folarin and former Deputy governor of the state, Alhaji Azeem Gbolarunmi, arrived Arisekola’s house and started singing abusive songs against Governor Abiola Ajimobi and some members of the state council of NURTW led by the caretaker chairman, Taofeek Ayorinde were on seat. Some of them were even said to be pointing hands towards the governor.
Several attempts made by Gbolarunmi to call the PDP supporters to order proved abortive as they kept singing abusive songs against the governor who was in Arisekola’s house to pay him Sallah homage. Are Musulumi not happy with the situation tried effortlessly to calm them but the PDP supporters rebuffed all entreaties to keep quiet and honour the governor. The story, however, changed to the disadvantage of the members of the PDP when the state Chairman of the Oyo NURTW, Alhaji Taofeek Oyerinde (a.k.a Fele) tried to intervene but his authority was challenged by PDP members thereby forcing the NURTW members to rise in defence of their boss leading to the bloody clash.
