Two Nigerians based in London have been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
The suspects, Afolabi Akindinru and Elias Eze, were allegedly caught with 1.435 kg of cocaine and 2.575 kg of methamphetamine at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos recently.
The NDLEA commander at the aiport, Mr Hamza Umar, told CRIME DIGEST that Akinduru tested positive to cocaine. While under observation, he excreted 1.435kg of cocaine.
On the other hand, Eze was about to board a British Airways flight to London when 2.575kg of methamphetamine was found in his luggage.
“The arrests were made during normal search operations at the airport. We have commenced investigation and they will be charged for unlawful possession and exportation,” Hamza said.
The suspects, who have lived in London for a minimum of seven years each, allegedly confessed to NDLEA investigators that hardship forced them to traffick in hard drugs.
“If not for my financial situation, I cannot smuggle drugs,” Akinduru said.
Eze claimed that he was paid N100, 000 to ferry his consignment of drugs to Britain. He said, “A friend told me I could help myself by doing drugs. I was given N100,000 and was promised another £3,000 when I get to London. They said that others were doing it and that it was not a big deal.”
In his reaction, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency chairman, Ahmadu Giade warned of the agency’s continued efforts to frustrate drug traffickers. “It is criminal to indulge in drug trafficking. The agency will continue to prevent drug trafficking through arrests, drug seizures and prosecution of offenders,” he said.
