Third Mainland bridge opens fully Nov 6

The Federal Ministry of Works has said all sections of the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge are scheduled to be fully open to traffic from Tuesday, November 6 this year.

Motorists in the commercial city had expected the bridge to be opened last week but was shifted after it was discovered that on-going pavement repair works will not be ready as earlier anticipated because the contractor handling the repairs had anticipated it could deliver earlier than scheduled.

Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen, is scheduled to be in Lagos on Tuesday to declare the bridge open and to thank Lagos residents for their patience.

According to reports, Borini Pro, the contractors handling the project, had been ahead of schedule with the job, but could not complete it in time for it to be reopened a week earlier than scheduled.

A statement by the Director, South-West, Federal Ministry of Works, Ejike Mgbemena, states: “I’m sorry to inform you of the postponement of the opening of Third Mainland Bridge. We lately discovered that the on-going pavement repair works will not be ready earlier than anticipated and this is responsible for this postponement.”

The bridge which has been partially closed to motorists since July 1, is the longest of three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland. Its partial closure resulted in traffic gridlocks along the bridge and other alternate routes provided by the Lagos State authorities.

In a related development, The Lagos State Government has announced a partial diversion of traffic on the Ijora-Apapa Expressway on Saturday, October 27 and Sunday, October 28 from 8am to 11am.

According to Commissioner for Transportation, Mr.  Kayode Opeifa, the diversion is to enable the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) commence the erection of pre-stressed beams across Ijora/Apapa-Oshodi Expressway by Iganmu Bridge.
