A crime analyst, Mr. Folorunsho Atta, has called on the Presidency to ensure that the officer succeeding the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mohammed Abubakar, must be a reformist like him.
This was even as he argued that the immediate past Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), in charge of Administration, Joel Azubuko Udah, would have been the best IG for the country. Udah was one who came up with the blueprint on giving amnesty to militants at the Niger Delta region, thus restoring peace to the volatile area.
While urging the Presidency to appoint a reformist like Abubakar, to succeed the retiring IG, Atta said that the current insecurity in the country was a product of Nigeria’s system of ‘man-knows-man’. The analyst said that if creditable people were appointed to offices where they could explore their performances for service delivery, the current insecurity would not have reared its ugly head.
He said: ‘It is obvious that Abubakar’s tenure will soon expire, but the Presidency must look for a honest man, whose track record in the force is flawless to succeed him. There are a few incorruptible officers in the force today.
These few men may not get to the top because of the influences of technocrats, traditional rulers and former presidents who always impose their candidates on whoever occupies Aso Rock.”
